1. Tell us more about the role in managed care as a marketing liaison pharmacist

  • Lenore works at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan in a managed care role
  • Works directly with client groups to educate them on their pharmacy benefits, is involved in reducing cost/healthcare expenditure by enrolling groups in clinical programs, and educates members on an individual basis in the field during open enrollment meetings
  • Main point of contact/liaison between the sales and marketing team and internal pharmacy department

2. How did Lenore get this role?

  • Was not exposed to managed care pharmacy (or other nontraditional roles) during pharmacy school
  • Pursued a fellowship in biotech upon graduation and worked in a hospital pharmacy for a few years
  • Learned about managed care through a former classmate
  • Intrigued about being able to work directly with clients

3. What career goals will this job help her achieve?

  • Hospital and biotech experience help her focus her attention on the patient
  • Managed care combines many different aspects of pharmacy
  • Educate patients in addition to clients to bring awareness to changes happening in healthcare

4. What information would have been helpful earlier in her pharmacy career?

  • Got involved more with student organizations
  • Networked more with faculty and alumni
  • Take the time to educate yourself on all of the different options while you are in school

5. What 3 pieces of advice would she give to someone who wanted to get started down a path to managed care pharmacy?

  • Networking. Whether it’s with classmates, pharmacists, or alumni, learn more about types of roles and educate yourself on the different roles available in pharmacy
  • Get involved in the college if you’re a student, as well as utilizing online resources that exist such as the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy
  • Get experience, whether it’s a rotation, internship, or shadowing someone in the field

  1. Thanks so much for sharing this interview! I found it extremely informative and interesting. I am currently a full-time MPH student focusing in Epidemiology with plans to attend pharmacy school afterwards. I have had two internships within the pharmaceutical industry and am eager to explore the managed care sector of pharmacy in the future.
