We are familiar with pharmacy organizations from school, but have you ever considered working for one?

Position: Director of Education Development and Outcomes at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP)

1. Can you give us an overview of ASHP as an organization?

  • A pharmacy association made up of primarily health system pharmacists and ambulatory care pharmacists
    • Has about 40,000 members
  • ASHP has a staff of 200 people
    • 65 pharmacists on staff
    • Openings all throughout the year posted in their job listings
  • Most schools have a student ASHP group
  • Host an annual Midyear Meeting
    • Prime place to make contacts for residency

 

2. Could you tell us more about your particular role with ASHP?

  • Held 3 primary roles over the course of 32 years
    • Assistant editor for AJHP (held the role for 12 years)
    • Worked with ASHP Advantage (a Continuing Education program)
    • Director of Education, Development and Outcomes

 

3. What are pharmacists doing at ASHP?

  • ASHP is a very large publisher
    • In addition to their journal, they have a formulary service and publish many books
  • Continuing Education services
  • Legislative pharmacy opportunities

 

4. Are there any other jobs/positions at ASHP that you would like to highlight?

  • Resurrected an executive residency program
    • Candidates would be new graduates interested in exploring association management
    • Residents will have the opportunity to shadow all of the executive leadership and senior leadership teams at ASHP
    • Residents will often find their way onto the staff of ASHP after completion of residency
