Could you give us a brief overview of your career?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Started out traditionally with a bachelor\u2019s degree from the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy\n<ul>\n<li>Completed his PharmD at the University of Michigan after learning pharmacists could work in more locations than just drug stores<\/li>\n<li>Completed a residency before his PharmD<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Continued his career\u00a0as a manager\/clinical pharmacist at the Cook County Hospital in Chicago\n<ul>\n<li>Selectively chose a practice site with need for frontier work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Manager role at Rush University Medical Center\n<ul>\n<li>Developed practice models and spent several years in TPN management<\/li>\n<li>Advised doctors on TPN prescriptions\u00a0and provide accurate nutrition to patients<\/li>\n<li>Master&#8217;s degree in nutrition\n<ul>\n<li>Highly encourages individuals to get additional credentials if the opportunities arise<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Launched a consulting career after 20 years of clinical\/managerial practice\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/pharmaconsultantinc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">PharmaConsultant Inc.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. What\u2019s your vision for the pharmacy profession?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pharmacists need to think of themselves as adding a value-added service\n<ul>\n<li>Not limited to distribution alone<\/li>\n<li>The service does not become a commodity<\/li>\n<li>Fees charged based on your value to the client<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Distributive services will become automated\n<ul>\n<li>Filling\/handing out prescriptions<\/li>\n<li>Advice: Stop training technicians to do cognitive tests, you\u2019re giving away your \u201cbread and butter\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Pharmacists should be doing medication histories, MTM, and taking prescriptions from doctors&#8217; offices<\/li>\n<li>The oversupply of pharmacists is REAL\n<ul>\n<li>Creating a negative effect on salaries<\/li>\n<li>Creating a negative effect on the applicant pool for colleges of pharmacy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>We are in a unique position\n<ul>\n<li>Pharmacists are the drug experts<\/li>\n<li>We have to prove it in order to make ourselves valuable<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3. Can you tell us more about what you do with Pharmaconsultant Inc.?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Involved in consulting before launching his company<\/li>\n<li>Always looked outside of the 4-walls of the hospital\n<ul>\n<li>Consulting opportunities included marketing\/sales consulting, sales training, developing newsletters, speaking programs, product development, product assessment, sponsored lectures, publishing, education<\/li>\n<li>As a consultant, Jim looked for other companies that would need these same type of value-added services<\/li>\n<li>Worked as the editor of The Journal of Pharmacy Practice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>One important idea is to set your scope outside of pharmacy\n<ul>\n<li>Spent time with others including physicians, lawyers, nurses, physical therapists\n<ul>\n<li>All of these people have the need for a pharmacist\u2019s expertise<\/li>\n<li>Every chance you have to speak in front of these people is a chance to gain future consulting business<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t be afraid to do some work for free\n<ul>\n<li>Consider this time to be networking\/marketing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Taught at a local community college and asked about needs for a pharmacist to teach\n<ul>\n<li>Became course director for nursing school pharmacology<\/li>\n<li>Gained experience and credentials from this opportunity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The key in any consulting\/entrepreneur type activity is to let people know who you are, what you do, and that you\u2019re available<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>4. Do you have any advice to offer pharmacy entrepreneurs?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have a good, solid practice base (5-10 years of experience, become very good at what you do)<\/li>\n<li>Network<\/li>\n<li>Support your alumni\/college<\/li>\n<li>Get whatever certifications are available<\/li>\n<li>Lecture\/teach<\/li>\n<li>Have a professionally designed website<\/li>\n<li>Consulting usually starts as an add-on to whatever it is you are already doing\n<ul>\n<li>Be clear with your employer that there are no conflicts of interest<\/li>\n<li>Reach out to people that you think could be your clients<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Maintain a strong, professional presence<\/li>\n<li>Publish\n<ul>\n<li>Every time you write something, there is a potential return on your investment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>5. What opportunities exist for pharmacists currently interested?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jim subcontracts out many projects for pharmacists to do research for him\n<ul>\n<li>Kinetic workups<\/li>\n<li>Emergency Room pharmacist<\/li>\n<li>Frequently uses services of pharmacists from settings in which he doesn\u2019t routinely work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The best thing you can do for your client is to recognize if you\u2019re not the best person to help, and find someone to subcontract that is\n<ul>\n<li>You build your reputation this way<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>When you put yourself out as a consultant, you need to ensure that your services are value-added services\n<ul>\n<li>You can charge more for these types of services than you can earn occupying a drug store for a shift<\/li>\n<li>Compensation can range from 3-4 times the hourly rate of a pharmacist, and sometimes up to 10+ times the normal hourly rate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As pharmacists, we all have expertise.\u00a0 No one is going to come find you, you have to let everyone know that you are available.\u00a0 Seek to better understand what a potential client is doing, and let them know how you can help<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPharmacists are important.
