If you&#8217;re not familiar with Pharmacy Podcast, it&#8217;s actually the most popular and downloaded podcast about the pharmacy industry with over 50,000+ subscribers and listeners. In addition to the podcast, Tony has also had a very nontraditional path through pharmacy to this point.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. What is Pharmacy Podcast and what is your role within that production?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Was a longtime listener to the podcast and tweeted on their twitter stream<\/li>\n<li>Heard his name &#8220;Tony_PharmD&#8221; on the live podcast one day<\/li>\n<li>Realized that social media is interactive, not just something you listen to<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/erinalbert\/\">Erin Albert<\/a>: PharmD, co-host Pharmacy podcast\n<ul>\n<li>Did a piece on 5 Roads Out of Retail<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/toddeury\/\">Todd Eury: <\/a>Director of Pharmacy Future Leaders\n<ul>\n<li>This is the segment Tony got involved with<\/li>\n<li>Idea was based on a John Lee Dumas Podcast called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eofire.com\/\">Entrepreneur on Fire&#8221;<\/a><\/li>\n<li>They started to produce a new episode every week<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The podcast has been around for 8-9 years\n<ul>\n<li>Another segment with Darshan Kulkarni (attorney) called Gavel &amp; Pestle Podcast Show<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Several co-hosts on the show focus\u00a0on different topics<\/li>\n<li>Look to host people that are not only\u00a0doing something for themselves, but for the profession as a whole<\/li>\n<li>There are 3 things that you need with a podcast:\n<ul>\n<li>Consistency<\/li>\n<li>Interesting\/diverse content<\/li>\n<li>Having dedicated team members<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. How important is consistency? Does that also mean frequently?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>NPR will put out a podcast every Sunday<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Your audience needs to know what to expect<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Once a week would be a good place to be<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3. How long have you been a co-host on Pharmacy Podcast?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>~\u00a030 to 40 episodes (about one year)<\/li>\n<li>Every student has a new story<\/li>\n<li>It is easier to come up with content when you are talking to someone as opposed to deriving all the content yourself<\/li>\n<li>The life of a podcast is similar to the life of a new business\n<ul>\n<li>Most will die off within the first year<\/li>\n<li>Many more will die off within the first 5 years<\/li>\n<li>Pharmacy Podcast has outlived that<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>4. What&#8217;s been your favorite story so far?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/blgerleman\/\">Brandon Gerleman<\/a> (PharmD)\n<ul>\n<li>Found from twitter with 400-500 followers<\/li>\n<li>Consistently Tweeted<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Asked Brandon to come onto the podcast\n<ul>\n<li>Extremely passionate about independent pharmacy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>This project\u00a0has allowed for connections to be made that would have never happened\u00a0without the podcast<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>5. What advice do you have to offer folks who are looking to start a new project?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Has only met one of the other people from Pharmacy Podcast\n<ul>\n<li>The podcast has a strong community<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>People are definitely attracted to community\n<ul>\n<li>Something they don&#8217;t get as a P4 or pharmacist<\/li>\n<li>We all exist on our own islands<\/li>\n<li>Hospital pharmacist vs. retail pharmacist vs. independent pharmacy owner\n<ul>\n<li>We&#8217;ve divided ourselves into these groups instead of having one\u00a0central community<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>APhA and ASHP are large organizations\n<ul>\n<li>They still aren&#8217;t unified in a way that millennials are unified<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>6. What are &#8220;The Three C&#8217;s&#8221;?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Consistent Content<\/li>\n<li>Caring Contributor<\/li>\n<li>Community Collaboration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>7. How did you get started in your pharmacy career and where is the path you&#8217;re on leading you to now?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Started off with a very traditional route<\/li>\n<li>School tried to change Bachelor&#8217;s into a PharmD, but students petitioned against it\n<ul>\n<li>Didn&#8217;t want another year of lost wages<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The PharmD came in handy later in life when for more academic jobs<\/li>\n<li>Started to struggle with repetitive use syndromes from retail, such as carpal tunnel and knee problems\n<ul>\n<li>Scared by the experience, and then got a real estate license<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>First year in real estate was terrible\n<ul>\n<li>Only made $5,000<\/li>\n<li>In 2 years, started to make a pharmacist&#8217;s salary<\/li>\n<li>In 2007 (with a team of 3 people), brought in $253,000<\/li>\n<li>Was coached\u00a0in California<\/li>\n<li>Learned about the 80\/20 rule\n<ul>\n<li>20% of your clients represent 80% of your business<\/li>\n<li>Put all your energy into the 20%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Passion project was teaching\n<ul>\n<li>Started teaching Kaplan courses for GMAT<\/li>\n<li>Worked in a Baltimore middle school<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>8. Any words of wisdom for people with an entrepreneurial spirit?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Working out of fear worked really well<\/li>\n<li>You should have a passion project<\/li>\n<li>Having only a pharmacy job is an extremely risky investment\n<ul>\n<li>Seemed counterintuitive at first because the traditional advice was get a medical career and you&#8217;re set<\/li>\n<li>Having a single career these days is very risky<\/li>\n<li>Soon, 30-50% of work is going to be contract work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Became an Audible Author\n<ul>\n<li>Currently makes monthly income from book<\/li>\n<li>If you hit a pain point, you can really do the Zig Ziglar\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;help everyone else get what they want so you can get what you want&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Be sure to connect with Tony on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenontraditionalpharmacist.com\/staging\/8323\/pharmacy-network\/\">Pharmacy Network<\/a> and reach out to us with any questions that you may have for him.
